Basic Room Measurement Guidelines
Let's start with bedroom measurement guidelines. These are the minimal space requirements based on minimum traffic flow allowances;
> Single bed/Nursery – 7’ x 8’6”. If you plan on having a chair or student desk in the room, add another 18” to either the length or width
> Double/Full Bed (or 2 twin beds) – 8’6” x 8’6”. This allows for a bed and side tables. Add 18” to include a dresser or chest of drawers, and 36” for an occasional chair
> Queen Bed – 9’0” x 8’8” - This allows for a bed and side tables. Add 18” to include a dresser or chest of drawers, and 36” for an occasional chair
> King Bed – 10’4” x 8’8” - This allows for a bed and side tables. Add 18” to include a dresser or chest of drawers, and 36” for an occasional chair
Closets in the bedroom – Minimum guidelines are 36” of closet pole per person in the room.
Living room dimensions can vary widely since we all choose different styles of furnishings.
Sofas, loveseats and armchairs average at about 36” depth;
add 18”-24” as the distance to the coffee table and any passage between furniture
average side table is 24” wide
width or depth of the room for television watching varies by the size of the television. An easy, basic guide is based on the diagonal screen size. For a 40” TV, minimum distance is 4’; if the TV is 42” – min. distance is 4’2”; 46” TV – is 4’6”…. For a maximum distance, add anywhere from 2’ to 2’6” for large screen TV’s.
Dining room dimensions depend on what your current table size. Add a minimum of 36” on all sides of the table to allow for seating and passage around the table. Add a minimum of 18” to the width or depth to accommodate a china cabinet or buffet. Ideally the ceiling fixture would be centred over the table but if it’s not, the fixture could be swaged or it can be replaced with a track-type system. Many new track systems also have pendant light options. These options are much easier and less costly the hiring an electrician to move the junction box
